Austin

IM 70.3 Austin was fun but did not go as well as I was hoping.

My Half-IronMan (HIM) time improved by about an hour, from 6:02 to 5:05. However, the time I felt I was capable of achieving was around 4:10 to 4:15, and if I wouldn't have run into the issues I had, I would have had that time, easily.

The swim was challenging because it was wave starts and my wave and I kept catching the wave(s) in front of us, so swimming around them was a bit difficult, but part of the sport, right. There were also boats going around us, so I kept going up to breathe and waves would crash in my face as I would breathe, so I was flustered by that several times. Swim time was almost 10 minutes slower than what I trained for and was expecting.

The bike part was going to be rather simple since cycling has been my focus for a couple years. I was on a Cervelo P2C with Bontrager Aeolus 6.5's with a disc cover in the rear, along with a LG Rocket TT Helmet, so aerodynamics were no issue. However, about 7 miles in I noticed my seat sliding up and down. I knew sooner or later I was going to need to fix it. There was this downhill with a sharp, off-camber right hand turn that had a pretty good uphill segment, and I charged into it, took the turn well, but then I tried shifting into my little ring, and it wouldn't catch. I had to get off the bike to fix it. There was this lady on the opposite side of the road with chain issues, so I helped her and asked if she had an multi-tool so I could tighten my seat. Check. Seat fixed, shifting fixed, and I did a good deed to help the lady with her bike :)
Bike time was 2:30, which was about 15 minutes slower than what I was gunning for, but the whole stop to fix bike issue slowed me down quite a bit.

The run. 1:49. Hurt like heck, simply because dirt got into my shoes, and started rubbing around mile 3... and 4 blistered formed, one on the outside of each foot, and one on the inside of each foot. Around mile 6 I looked down and saw red on the part of my Saucony Tangents that were supposed to be white... no bueno. My goal time was a half-marathon of 1:15-1:20, but my feet were hurting with every step, but I still pushed thru with a 1:49, so it's another finish, but not where I wanted to be, but no real issues.

Glad to have earned another HIM medal, that's 2 HIMs and 1 IM in 2010, along with other various races. Not too shabby.

Not sure what the next HIM or IM will be... we shall see

Track Nationals

Wow, so Track Nationals was last week and it was so fun. It had its ups and downs, but overall was an amazing experience. My individual time for the 4kilometer race slightly improved, but my Kilo time was actually slower, and I trained more this year than last year... but the wind was CRAZZZZZY, but no excuses!

In 2009, the Men's team pursuit LWC squad ended up 6th, just off of the podium. 2010 was going to be different...
We all had one goal in mind- Ride as hard as we could and PODIUM. Cruise, Kip, Filip and I rode super hard and when we crossed the finish line... our time placed us into 1st place for the time being. There were still 6 or 7 teams to follow us. Two more teams went and our time was still on top, therefore we were guaranteed a podium spot, whether 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5... it was PODIUM! We were all jumping around with excitement, it was a glorious feeling.
Marian and Fort Lewis ended up taking 1st and 2nd, respectively, the LWC Men's crew placed 3rd at Nationals!!!!!!

Don Walker, from Don Walker Bikes, is an amazing person and sacrificed a lot to help the team towards our achievements at this great event.

LWC ended up 8th in team omnium, 2009 we were 6th... so we, as a team, have some work to do. I know I am hungry for more podiums next year at Track Nationals!

Been a while

So I realize it has been a couple weeks since I posted.. but a lot has happened in those two weeks.

I just finished my term at Kaplan... on to another one, in two weeks. I attended the Team BeachBody Game Plan Event in Elk Grove last week! It was awesome. So many amazing people there, and the Shakeology samples were to die for. YUM! I am now an Emerald Team BeachBody Coach... on the road to Ruby, then Diamond!

So I have been including Shakeology into my diet since I first got it a couple weeks ago. I definitely feel more energy at work, especially. I love how versatile Shakeology is, how you can add fruit to it or anything, really, and it tastes amazing... like a dessert, but actually has the nutritional value of like 5 salads and then some other amazing nutritional values, too! It is truly amazing becasue it makes the body full!

I received 250 Marathon Bars the other day.. 2 BIG boxes. They are pretty good, of course I test tried them. That's what they are there for, and to pass out at events, etc. Thanks Marathon Bars!

I had two days off in a row on Monday and Tuesday. That was the first time that had happened in weeks... it felt weird. Megan and I went to Raging Waters waterpark on Tuesday. It was nice and hot out, and we both caught some sweet rays, but the water was ridiculously cold! Weird!

Anywho, off to get ready for work shortly. Until next time. :)

Good day!

Today was quite interesting.

I worked from 9AM to 730PM.. which felt like forever! Met a couple really awesome people at work and got home and had TWO packages waiting for me.
One was containing my IronMan Perform Energy drink that I earned for entering into 2010 IronMan Louisville. And Box #2 had my Team Marathon Bar swag in it!!

Heck yea! Check out my Team BeachBody pages and let me help you achieve your fitness goals!!

New Ideas

My name is William Gates and I am trying to create a blog for the third time... Third time's a charm, right!? Yes!

I am a full-time student, full-time employee at Fleet Feet Sports, and full-time athlete, and more.

2010 has been a good year for me so far, I have done a bunch of things that I have not done before... I set a new 5K PR, I ran a 10K, completed 2 half marathons, completed a few triathlons, completed a duathlon, completed the "world's toughest half" IronMan, and got a couple sweet little sponsors:

Hoping to get a few more here soon. I have gotten quite a bit of top age group results and good overall results, as well.

I am studying to get my Bachelor's Degree in "Health and Wellness"! It is good because I love fitness! I need to be involved with health and fitness and racing because it is what makes me better!
I am going to become a BeachBody Coach because I think it will be a great way to start using my knowledge from my academics and experience as an athlete. I want to help people achieve their fitness and health goals and this is going to be a stellar way to do it!
I have to thank (Mom) Lorraine Gates* and James P. Manganiello** for getting me really interested in Team BeachBody. I have to thank my family and Megan (a.k.a. Megatron!) for giving me support :)

I am going to do my best to document my journey, my training for IronMan Louisville, and everything in between.

Oh man, I just accidently clicked the page out and thought I lost everything I had typed, but when I came back, it was auto-saved. Thank goodness for autosave! WHEW!

Until next time...

-William
